INTO THE DEEP
Riptide was our first robot on a fully aluminum chassis. Across two versions it won the Innovate and Think Awards, then the Design Award, 2nd Place, at the Washington State Championship.

Riptide
Riptide could complete sample or specimen cycles, with an active intake on fast linear slides.

The season
Riptide v1
Fall 2024
Our first custom robot of the season was Riptide. Its intake was a claw on a virtual four-bar that could grab samples from the inside or the outside, and a simple deposit arm and claw scored them, both riding on BWTLink slides (opens in a new tab). We later changed the intake to our first active intake of the season, keeping the rest of the robot the same.
Thanks to Fabworks (opens in a new tab) and their machining, it stayed light (about 23 lb) and compact (12.25 × 11.5 in). Use the code FTC23511 at checkout for 5% off at Fabworks.

Riptide v2
Jan 5, 2025
First played at the High Definition Invitational in Bellevue
Our second robot of the season kept the archetype of Riptide v1. The smaller intake and longer deposit transferred samples faster, and could intake and score specimens from both sides. It also got a new look: spray-painted aluminum plates and PolyMax PLA (opens in a new tab) for our 3D-printed parts.
Together with the move to Pinpoint and swingarm odometry (opens in a new tab), that let us push our autonomous programs to 5 specimens (opens in a new tab) and 6 samples (opens in a new tab).
Finally, a servo hang on two Axon MAX+ servos (opens in a new tab) reached the level 2 ascent. We planned a level 3 ascent with a gearbox shifting mechanism, but it was not working by States.

Octonaut
Octonaut is our robot for the offseason before DECODE, built for INTO THE DEEP gameplay. It runs an Octocanum drivetrain, also called a butterfly drive: eight wheels that toggle between standard wheels and omnidirectional mecanum wheels, a design attempted by fewer than a hundred teams over the years.
Carbon fiber plates save weight, and a power take-off for the level 3 ascent shares its servos with the Octocanum pods.
